Laurel softball team wins district tourneyThe Laurel Little League softball team swept a pair of games from both Morrell Park and South Baltimore to win the District championship. The team now moves on to the state tournament in Easton. After taking both games from Morrell Park by 7-0 scores, Laurel turned back South Baltimore, 19-18 and 7-4. Sara McCauly, who is typically Laurel’s left fielder, pitched four innings in the first South Baltimore game. Megan Gontareck came on in relief in the fifth and finished the game, striking out four. Second baseman Brianne Livingston recorded six assists, as Laurel played solid defense and fought back to take the lead in the seventh inning. Gontareck also pitched well in the second South Baltimore game. South Baltimore got a run in the first inning, but Laurel took a 2-1 lead in the third. South Baltimore regained the lead with three runs in the fourth. But Laurel answered with three runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Desiree Pressau, playing second base, threw out three runners in the sixth. Jessica Kelly hit a two-run single to give Laurel a couple of insurance runs. Russett stays unbeaten The Russett swim team earned a279-254 victory in a closely contested meet against the Kingfish Swim Club on Saturday as the Prince-Mont Swim League season continued. Gabe Cox, Taylor Hicks, Paige Kidd and Michaela Guild led the way for Russett as each won three events. Meanwhile, Tyler Reyda, Lauren Ritter, Alex Bowman and Alyssa Lindrose bolstered Russett’s scoring by each winning two events. Russett improved to 4-0 with the victory and will travel to Mount Rainier on Saturday to face Division F rival Prince George’s Council, which also is 4-0. Soccer teams seek players Laurel Soccer Club is forming a newU-9 girls’ travel soccer team that will begin league play this fall.
