This week’s federal contracts, deals and bankruptcy filings involving Maryland businesses include the following.

Federal

AAI Corp. of Hunt Valley won $2.53 million from the Navy for instruments and laboratory equipment.

Bioqual of Rockville won $24.02 million from the Department of Health and Human Services to house and maintain non-human primates.

Compass Systems of Lexington Park won $10.07 million from the Navy to design, manufacture and sustain avionic systems.

Comptech Corp. of Rockville won $97,240 from the Army for vehicular equipment components.

Danaher Tool Group of Sparks won $126 million from the Army for hand tools.

Forensic Medical Advisory Service of Rockville won $15,000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs for professional, administrative and management support services.

Globecomm Systems of Laurel won $83,711 from the Department of Agriculture for vehicles, motor vehicles, trailers and cycles

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory of Laurel won up to $367,199 from the Navy for a long-range, broad-agency announcement for Navy and Marine Corps Science and Technology.

Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems of Bethesda won $1.18 million for professional, administrative and management support services.

Maven Engineering of Rockville won $28,106 from the Army for axle wheel components steering vehicular brake.

MedImmune of Gaithersburg won up to $28.38 million from the Defense Logistics Agency for influenza vaccine packages.

Meso Scale Discovery of Gaithersburg won $99,850 from the Navy for research and development.

Metastorm Federal of Baltimore won $43,282 from the Department of State to maintain software.

Northrop Grumman of Linthicum Heights won $17,600 from the Air Force for research and development.

Nu-Tek Precision Optical of Aberdeen won $76,036 from NASA for a laser beam expander.

Persaud Cos. of Bethesda won $288,452 from the Department of Homeland Security to maintain, repair and alter real property.

Silynx Communication of Rockville won $1.47 million from the Department of Justice for communications equipment.

Washington Music Sales Center of Wheaton won from the Army $36,472 for musical instruments, phonographs and home-type radios and $6,799 for musical instruments.

Wintara Inc. of Fort Washington won $16.48 million from the Army to build structures and facilities.

DEALS

Wall Street Institute of Baltimore opened its 400th English language instruction center, in Qingdao, China.

Olympus Partners of Stamford, Conn., a private equity firm, acquired Ann’s House of Nuts Inc. of Jessup through a newly formed affiliated entity from the Zinke family, which maintains an ownership stake and will continue to be involved. The company, with $250 million in annual sales, manufactures private-label and branded snack-nut and trail-mix products. It has a large production facility in Robersonville, N.C.

Sricon Infrastructure, a subsidiary of India Globalization Capital of Bethesda, won an 18-month, $4.2 million contract from Vijay Engineering to provide civil engineering services and build a housing complex in Kalburgi, India.

Brown Advisory and Alex. Brown Investment Management, both of Baltimore and once part of the same company, merged. The new firm will have about $18 billion in client assets and will operate under the Brown Advisory name.

HNS Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems of Germantown, was selected by Sistemas Tecnicos de Loterias del Estado of Madrid, Spain, to provide broadband satellite systems. The company provides information technology and telecommunications services to the Spanish state lottery authority. Hughes was also selected by the Social Security Administration to provide support services for its distance learning network under an initial task order for $4 million. The total award is expected to be worth more than $40 million over five years.

Triumfant of Rockville was selected by the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland to provide its detection and repair software.

Micros Systems of Columbia was selected by Burger King Corp. to provide its point-of-sale information technology system for Burger King’s approximately 800 company-owned restaurants in the United States.

Fortress International Group of Columbia was selected by the University of Chicago to complete upgrading a laboratory facility. The contract is expected to exceed $2.8 million. Fortress also won a $10 million contract to design and build a data center expansion in Boston. Fortress booked $37 million for the second quarter, for a year-to-date total of $91 million, up 46 percent from $62 million in the first six months of 2007

Laureate Education of Baltimore acquired the 36,000-student Universidad Tecnológica de México and the 16,000-student Universidad Latina and 4,000-student Universidad Americana, both in Costa Rica.

IMagicLab of Owings Bills, which provides software for automobile dealers, acquired privately held 5Square.com of Westlake Village, Calif., which provides Web-based sales force automation and customer relationship management applications for the automobile retailing sector. IMagicLab also is expanding its headquarters with the lease of 11,000 more square feet of office space.

PROPERTY

Renaissance Hotels & Resorts opened the 174-room Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo (Calif.) Hotel & Fitness Resort. It is managed by Marriott International of Bethesda for Leisure Sports Inc. and R.D. Olsen.
