A Germantown woman who was fleeing the scene of a car crash died when she lost control of her car and crashed into a deck on Thursday afternoon.

Isaura Justina Mateo, 60, of the 20000 block of Dunstable Court, crashed her 1994 Subaru Legacy station wagon through a fence, into a backyard and then into the deck of a residence in the 19700 block of Maycrest Way in Germantown, according to Montgomery County Police.

No one was on the deck at the time of the crash, said Jeanette Wright, a police spokeswoman.

Mateo was fleeing the scene of a crash after her vehicle struck a SUV at the intersection of Middlebrook Road and Scenery Drive. The driver of a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder was following her at the time of the fatal crash, police said.

The vehicle, driven by Daniel Goldstein, 36, of 11000 block of Grassy Knoll Terrace in Germantown, received minor damage to the front bumper, according to police. Wright said Goldstein was following Mateo at a normal speed at the time of the fatal crash.

Police are asking witnesses to call 301-840-2435.
