What’s a ‘liberal’?

In his letter concerning day labor centers, Al Eisner claims that liberals believe that illegal immigrants who use the centers are ‘‘the backbone of our economy” (‘‘Stop support for day labor centers,” July 2). I know of no such ‘‘liberals.”

In accord with the American College dictionary, I define a liberal as one who is open to new ideas for progress and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others.

When there was a need for low-paid workers, illegal immigrants were encouraged and hired to take such jobs. Now that our economy is sluggish, many people are not concerned for the well-being of these immigrants and wish to close day labor centers and have the workers returned to their native country.

I suspect that most liberals sympathize with the plight of those immigrants looking for work and hope our Congress provides a means, including taxes, for permitting them to become citizens.
