The county’s animal services division is investigating a dog attack that led to the death of another dog in Damascus on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Tralee Terrace and Tralee Court, county police reported. The attack was over when police arrived, said Lucille Baur, a county police spokeswoman.

A large tan dog, possibly a mastiff⁄pit bull mix, was chasing a small black dog the size of a dachshund through the neighborhood when a woman walked by with her two Pomeranians, police said. The large dog attacked the two small dogs, killing one and injuring another, Baur said. The nature of the second dog’s injuries was not known at press time Tuesday evening.

The small black dog that the large dog had been chasing escaped injury, police reported.

The owner of the Pomeranians suffered a bite to her hand as she attempted to separate the dogs, but she does not know which dog bit her, Baur said.

Police do not know who owns the large dog, but the animal is described as having short hair and weighing about 70 pounds. The dog ran away before the animal services officers arrived and it could not be found, Baur said.

Anyone with information about the incident can remain anonymous and is asked to call the Montgomery County Animal Services Division at 240-773-5925.
