A 6-year-old Gaithersburg boy drowned Wednesday evening in a pool at a relative’s home in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County police.

Scott Tran of the 8800 block of Cross Country Place was attending a family gathering and playing in a backyard in-ground pool in the 13100 block of New Hampshire Avenue with seven or eight other children.

A 9-year-old boy noticed Tran was lying at the bottom of the deep end of the pool, according to a police news release. He jumped into the pool and pulled Tran to the surface. The homeowners got Tran out of the pool and began efforts to resuscitate him. Police arrived about 8:45 p.m. to help fire and rescue workers. The child was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police said there were adults present and at least two were near the pool when the drowning occurred.

Tran was a kindergartner at Strawberry Knoll Elementary School in Gaithersburg, said Principal Frank Kaplan, who said the school is mourning with the rest of the community.

The PTA is putting together a care basket for Tran’s older sister, who will be a third-grader at Strawberry Knoll.

‘‘That’s what makes it even more hurtful—is that you’ve got a sibling who’s going to come here in August, and ‘little brother’ won’t be there,” he said.

Kaplan said he plans to speak to Tran’s family to see if there is anything the school can do to help.

Attempts to reach the family in Gaithersburg or the relatives in Silver Spring were unsuccessful.
