Maryland stem cell commission named

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. on Thursday named the final four members of the 15-member Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission. The commission, to be administered by the Maryland Technology Development Corp., will now meet to appoint an independent scientific peer review committee that will review, evaluate, rank and rate research proposals eligible for the $15 million in state money available for stem cell research.

The commission members are:

*Governor’s appointees:

Bowen P. Weisheit Jr., lawyer and member of Maryland chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; patient advocate.

Jack C. Chow, former assistant director-general of World Health Organization; biotechnology representative.

Joseph Capizzi, professor at the Catholic University of America; expert in biomedical ethics as it relates to religion.

Rabbi Joel Zaiman, rabbi emeritus, Chizuk Amuno Congregation, Jewish Scholar at Institute of Christian and Jewish Studies; expert in biomedical ethics as it relates to religion.

*Senate appointees:

Brenda Crabbs, former chairwoman of Maryland chapter of National Arthritis Foundation; patient advocate.

Linda Powers, managing director of Toucan Capital; biotechnology representative.

*House appointees:

John Kellerman, Parkinson’s patient; patient advocate.

Gloria Marrow, vice chairwoman of Transplant Resource Center of Maryland; biotechnology representative.

*Johns Hopkins University appointees:

Dr. Diane Griffin, professor and chairwoman of molecular microbiology and immunology department at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Murray B. Sachs, professor and director of biomedical engineering department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Dr. Jeremy Sugarman, professor at Johns Hopkins bioethics institute.

*University System of Maryland appointees:

Steven Salzberg, director of Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, University of Maryland, College Park.

Suzanne Ostrand-Rosenberg, professor of biological sciences, University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Karen Rothenberg, dean and Marjorie Cook professor of law, University of Maryland School of Law, Baltimore.

*Attorney general appointee:

Jack Schwartz, assistant attorney general and director of office’s health policy unit.
