MacroGenics of Rockville named Paulo F. Costa an independent director. Costa is former president and CEO of Novartis U.S. Corp. and also worked for Johnson & Johnson.

Current Group of Germantown named Ray Gogel president and COO. Previously, Gogel, 59, was chief administrative officer and chief information officer for Xcel Energy. He also worked for IBM Global Services and Public Service Electric & Gas.

Nexus Health of Oxon Hill named Verna S. Meacham president and CEO. Previously, Meacham was interim president of SSM St. Joseph Hospital West and an administrator at Methodist Hospitals in Indiana.

Nursing Spectrum honored the following nurses with its 2009 Nursing Excellence Awards in the Maryland-Virginia-Washington, D.C., region: Mary Lou Watson, vice president of nursing, St. Mary's Hospital, Leonardtown, Advancing and Leading the Profession; Cindy Rew, senior clinical nurse 2, University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Clinical Care; Joanne Evans, assistant director, Institute of Credentialing Innovation, American Nurses Credentialing Center, Silver Spring, Community Service; and Anne Belcher, associate professor and director, Office for Teaching Excellence, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Baltimore, teaching.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore named Kathleen M. Byington vice president for administration and finance, succeeding James T. Hill, who retired. Previously, Byington was vice president and chief business officer at Georgetown University Medical Center.
