The Frederick Heartbreakers Under-14 Black softball team earned a berth to the PONY World Series Berth by taking the “West Virginia Summer Sizzler“ fast-pitch tournament in Winchester, Va.
The Heartbreakers swept their three games on Saturday beating the Mavericks, 10-0, the Maryland Stars, 11-0 and the West Virginia Shockers, 4-0. On Sunday, the Heartbreakers defeated the Stars again, 5-3 and the Shockers again 6-4.
Alex Parker, (Thomas Johnson High) rung up two victories, recording 14 strikeouts, while Karla LeGore, (Walkersville) two victories with 10 strikeouts and recorded a no-hitter. Amber Myers of Boonsboro also pitched a no-hitter. Parker led the offense with six hits and five runs batted-in. Christy Hediger, (MSD), Emily Titus, (Westminster) and each had four hits for the tournament. Christy Haney of Leesburg had three hits. Cady Baer, (Catoctin), Rachel Young and LeGore, Jody Myers and Cindy Rehak, (North Carroll) each had two hits. Nikki Warnert, (Walkersville) added a base hit.
The Heartbreakers will travel to Cary, NC during the last week of July for the PONY World Series.
In Junior Division play, Notre Dame’s Devon Reed scored 10 points as Notre Dame defeated Stanford, 39-27. Seth Myers led the Cardinal with eight points. Kentucky easily handled Georgetown 39-14 behind 10 points from Brendan Wharton.
UConn got past Cincinnati 37-27, Darren Ambush dropped in 15 points. Kenneth Hagins paced the Bearcats with 14. Virginia trimmed Wake Forest, 30-27, as Zachary Welch poured in 14 points. Wake Forest was led by Avery Ezell’s eight-point effort.
St. John’s downed Maryland 32-27, as Zachary Fontenot fired in 15. Tayquan Palmer and Austin Gibson scored 15 and 10 points, respectively for the Terps.
Sean Caravaggio registered 10 points St. John’s defeated North Carolina, 29-21. Kwaevon McDonald tied for game-high honors with 10 points for the Tar Heels.In Senior Division action, the Bulls received double figure scoring from five players in a 97-47 romp over the Trailblazers.
Jordan Clayton led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Shihee Bowie and C.J. Ingram (16 each), Joe Atmonavage (14), and Kenny Hill (12).
Forest Mason tossed in 19 for the Trailblazers, while James Grant added 10.
The Lakers received a dozen points each from Robert Lapham and Daniel Dixon as they upended the Bobcats, 62-48.
Gennero Branison led Charlotte with 17 points, followed by James McGee with 11.
Blake Sheppard led a balanced scoring attack for the Mavs as the trimmed the Cavs, 48-45. Jarey Curry and Nathaniel Bowie posted 11 points each for the winners. Darryl Sanders was the Cavs’ top scorer with 12.
The Timberwolves had little trouble with the Knicks in a 56-33 triumph. Craig Johnson tallied 12 for the winners, while Ian Fisher topped the Knicks’ scoring list with 11.
In the BCWB Reunion Game, the East defeated the West 64-57. The East was led by Trayvon Vann’s 24 points, followed by Monte James’ 14. Guy Barnes and Jerry LeBlanc added 10 each for the victors. Chris Thompson was the West’s top scorer with 16. Antwon Smith and Hamilton Woodfolk added 13 and 11, respectively.
The following athletes qualified for the upcoming National AAU track and field meet by finishing the top four of their respective events in last weekend’s Regional Meet in Philadelphia.
Kia Reinhardt—- 80 meter hurdles, Long jump, Kia Thomas (Javelin, Shot Put, and Discus), Aaron Mercer—Javelin and Shot Put), Breayna Mercer (1,500 Race-walk), Kendra McAbee- 1500 (Race-walk), Kaylin Staton (Shot Put) and T.O. Johnson (200). The National meet will be held in Detroit in late July.

The Potomac Valley Soccer Club (PVYA) will conduct holding tryouts for its competitive travel teams at 6:30 p.m., July 7 at Point of Rocks Park on. Tryouts will be for the Under-11 BBSL (Baltimore Beltway Soccer League) and FCYSL D1 (Frederick County Soccer League) squads.
Other divisions and age groups will hold tryouts in early August.

The Five-Star Foundation has grants available for its Five-Star Basketball Camps throughout the area.
Overnight boys camps will be conducted at Mount St. Mary’s University, while other camps will be hosted in Frederick City, Riverdale Baptist High in Upper Marlboro, Georgetown Prep in Rockville, the Bowie City Gym and at Gonzaga High in Washington, D.C.

The Tri-State Volleyball Camp will take place from July 30-Aug. 1 at Grace Academy in Hagerstown.
The camp will be run daily from 8:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., and is limited to experienced players who play at least 12-and-under club volleyball or high school level volleyball. The camp will be limited to 32 players.
Coaches featured at the camp include former University of Maryland head coach Janice Kruger and Kelli Myers, former head coach at the University of Connecticut. Cost for the camp is $150 per player.
Tri-State will also conduct a coaches clinic on July 30 at Grace Academy from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. The clinic is open to all club, middle school and high school coaches, as well as though who aspire to coach at these levels.

American University head volleyball coach, Barry Goldberg, will conduct individual skills, setters, and competition camps at Bender Arena on the campus of American University this summer.
The individual skills camp will run from July 29-Aug. 1, while the setters camp on Aug. 2-3, and team camp will run from Aug. 2-3 and 4-7, respectively, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
