From 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., Tuesday, a Frederick tavern will send 10 percent of collected receipts to the Patty Pollatos Fund to aid a Walkersville boy battling brain cancer.

Tyler Condren, 11, of Walkersville was diagnosed with brain cancer April 4, his mother, Pauleen Condren, said last week.

‘‘He was having headaches, and he went to the pediatrician, who sent him to the emergency room,” Condren said.

An X-ray revealed an egg-sized tumor behind Tyler’s eye, similar to the tumor that recently forced U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy into surgery, she said.

According to the Patty Pollatos Fund Web site, Tyler’s cancer is a very aggressive form known as glioblastoma. Surgery in April removed the tumor, but Tyler must travel about 100 miles five days a week to receive chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville.

‘‘It’s extremely rare for children to get it,” Condren said. ‘‘His time is probably very limited. It’s a very sad situation, but we’re trying to keep it lighthearted for him.”

The fundraiser at The Greene Turtle restaurant in downtown Frederick will be followed by an Aug. 3 fundraiser at Beef O’Brady’s, at Crestwood Boulevard and New Design Road in Frederick; other restaurant fundraisers are planned, according to the Patty Pollatos Fund, a nonprofit helping to support the family.

Tyler has played baseball for the U-12 Orioles in the Glade Valley Athletic Association. He just finished sixth grade at Walkersville Middle School as an honors student, and lives in Walkersville with his mother, father Eric and sister Hannah, 9. The Condrens moved to Walkersville from Frederick six years ago.

Emmitsburg scoutsready to recycle

Members of Boy Scout Troop 727 of Emmitsburg on Sunday will collect recyclable paper and aluminum at St. Joseph’s Rectory, at 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, according to a press release from the troop.

The scouts are offering a drive-through service from 8 a.m. until noon.

‘‘People can just drive by and the scouts will take the recyclables out of their cars,” said Scoutmaster Larry McKenna.

The troop will sell the collected goods and use the proceeds to send its 17 scouts, ages 11-18, to a weeklong summer camp next year, McKenna said. All the scouts are from the Emmitsburg area.

The troop meets each Thursday evening at St. Joseph’s.

Sunday marks the first of a year-long effort to get the kids into recycling and fundraising. The troop will be repeating the recycling drive-thru on the first Sunday of every month.

Some troop members are heading to camp in Goshen, Va., on Saturday. The camp costs about $300 per scout.

‘‘Those that are not going to camp are going to do the work this year,” McKenna said.

In addition to McKenna, Jon Carroll, Sheila Gray, Eric Isaacson, John Slotwinski and Lori Stromberg lead Troop 727.
