Residents, officials battle party-promoting neighborBowie man plans to rent out house in quiet neighborhood for partiesResidents of Mockingbird Lane just outside Bowie city limits say peaceful weekends have been the way of life in their secluded subdivision. But now they are battling a new neighbor who they say threatens to disrupt that serene environment by renting his pristine home and pool for occasional for-profit parties. When reached at the home Thursday afternoon, the property owner, who identified himself as Daniel Trump, said he bought the house in May and plans to rent it out for special occasions like weddings or birthday parties. He would not specify how often he would rent it, but said it would not be every weekend. ‘‘We are going to be very selective of the type of people that rent the place,” Trump said, adding he would like to cater to high-end clientele. Trump held the first party June 22 and promoted it on his Web site, www.bobbytrumpproductions.com, where he used the pseudonym ‘‘Bobby.” Internet domain registration lists Daniel Ofei of the 4600 block of Belle Dor Terrace in Bowie as the registrant. The noise, music, trash and open alcohol containers did not sit well with neighbors, who called police to report noise violations and blocked roadways. ‘‘We welcome any family and family gatherings. Those are cool, but not a club,” said Cheryl Graeve, who lives only a few doors down. ‘‘He would be absolutely welcome as a family home but not as a business. We will fight that tooth and nail.” While catching flak from neighbors, Trump also has caught the attention of county officials and police who plan to monitor his next party, slated for Sunday. Trump’s property is zoned rural residential and he is prohibited from operating a club or commercial recreation venture there unless he receives a special exception from the Prince George’s County Planning Board. Andrea Davey, a spokeswoman for the planning board, said no applications for an exception on the property have been filed. To forgo the planning board process, Trump said he plans to obtain a liquor license and a block party permit to legitimize the parties. Because he has not obtained either yet, he said he will not charge an entrance fee or for drinks at the upcoming party. Trump said he did not charge guests at the previous party. However, Prince George’s County police obtained flyers from the June 22 party that list drink prices ranging from $3 for soda to $100 for a bottle of Moët et Chandon champagne. Calls seeking comment from Trump on the flyers were not returned. Police contacted Trump the evening of June 26 and told him if he continues to have for-profit events without the required permits, he will be cited for violations, said District 2 Assistant Commander Capt. Christopher Cotillo. County Councilwoman Ingrid Turner (D-Dist. 4) of Bowie said county code inspectors will monitor the property Sunday for violations, including sale of alcohol or other commercial activity without a permit. ‘‘These are nice, quiet neighborhoods with responsive elected officials, and when we found out we immediately had our inspectors start an investigation,” Turner said. As a real estate agent and professional party promoter who has organized events at prime Washington, D.C., hot spots such as Love and H2O, Trump said he is trying to meet a need for gathering space in an innovative way. ‘‘A lot of people have been looking for a place like this,” said Trump, pointing to the heated swimming pool, modern décor, multiple bars and flat-screen TVs placed both inside and out. ‘‘We are just trying to make extra money because real estate is not as lucrative as it used to be.” E-mail Andrea Noble at anoble@gazette.net.
