Bowie led 2-0 when the Aeros scored twice off Baysox starter John Mariotti in the third inning. But the Baysox scored what proved to the be last run of the game in the bottom of the third, and three relievers combined to toss 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Robert Valido gave Bowie its first run on a solo homer in the first inning – his third home run of the season. Miguel Abreu led off the second by reaching on an error. He stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Guillermo Rodriguez.
Akron got a run in the third when Jared Goedert scored on a wild pitch by Mariotti. Cristo Arnal added an RBI single later in the inning. Bowie answered in the bottom of the third when Jonathan Tucker singled and Eric Crozier walked, and then Mike Costanzo singled to bring home Tucker.
Josh Perrault allowed a hit in the top of the seventh, but recorded his 14th save.
Abreu, Tucker, Perrault and Ryan Ouellette were named to the Eastern League Southern Division All-Star Team, and will be headed to Trenton, N.J., on July 15 for the all-star game. The all-star rosters were released on Wednesday.
Abreu, a 24-year-old second baseman, entered play Wednesday hitting .296 with three homers, 25 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Tucker, who celebrates his 26th birthday on Thursday, was hitting .260 with no homers and 24 RBIs. The Baysox leadoff hitter and starting center fielder is third in the league in stolen bases with 19.
Perrault, a 27-year-old right-hander, is the Baysox closer and has a 1.89 ERA in 33 appearances. Ouellette, a 23-year-old righty, also pitches out of the bullpen. He started the season with Class A Frederick, and since joining Bowie he is 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 16 appearances.
Bowie and Akron will play a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, and the teams are scheduled for one more game Friday at Prince George's Stadium before the Baysox head to Altoona for a three-game series starting Saturday.
