As part of the city's Independence Day celebrations, the Laurel Fourth of July Committee is having its ninth Annual Car Show on Saturday.
Check in for cars participating in the parade is from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Phelps Center, Eighth and Montgomery Street. The parade begins at 11 a.m.
Check in for cars just participating in the car show begins at 11 a.m. on Mulberry Street.
Fireworks display will be at 9:15 p.m. over Laurel Lake.
The event costs $10. Dash plaques will be given to the first 70 cars registered and the 20 most popular cars will receive awards.

Resident makes Pennsylvania university dean's list
Edward K. Besse of Laurel is among the 1,345 University of Scranton students named to the 2009 spring semester dean's list.
A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours to make the dean's list.
The list includes students from Scranton's College of Arts and Sciences, the Kania School of Management, the Panuska College of Professional Studies and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education.
Laurel resident graduates from Emory University
Kadhija Shahela of Laurel graduated with a Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at its 164th commencement ceremony on May 11.

First United Methodist Church to host Fourth of July concert
The First United Methodist Church is having a free musical concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at its Fellowship Hall, 424 Main St.

Woodland Job Corps teens cook into finals
Four aspiring chefs from the Woodland Job Corps Academy in Laurel finished third at the 2009 Job Corps Culinary Arts Expo that occurred June 15 through 19 at Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing, N.J.
Ashley Thomas, Latisa Toland, Ashley Williams and Caullen Mangialetti, under the direction of their instructors, chefs Cassandra Richardson, Monique Williams and Peter Gibbons, defeated 12 teams from Job Corps centers and academies in Delaware, Washington, D.C., Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
The second Woodlands team, comprised of Anthony Palmer Jr., Angelica Martinez, Julia Briggs-Moseley and Delanta Harrell did not advance to the final round but won second place for Best Dressed Team, third place for best sanitation practices and best centerpiece and fourth place for food presentation.
Local bank raises $25,000 for children's center
Laurel's Tower Federal Credit Union hosted its 27th Annual Tower Classic Golf Tournament at the Cross Creek Golf Club in Beltsville on June 18 that raised $25,000 total for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
With 92 golfers and 33 sponsors, the day's event raised $15,000 for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, a member hospital of the Children's Miracle Network. CO-OP Financial Services contributed an additional $10,000 through their Miracle Match Program for a total donation of $25,000.
Since 1998, the Tower Classic has raised $120,000 to aid severely ill children at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, said spokeswoman Natasha Henry.
Laurel Mill Playhouse to host auditions
Laurel Mill Playhouse is holding auditions for its August production of "Don Juan in Hell," at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the theater 508 Main St. Produced by Maureen Rogers under special arrangement with Samuel French Publishing Company, the play will run from Aug. 28 to 30.

Laurel-based graphic design studio Dever Designs was recently named a winner in the American Corporate Identity/25 Competition.
Dever Designs won awards for its Fertile Minds Ad, National Association of REALTORS Media Kit and Society for Neuroscience 2008 Annual Report.
Howard County police's athletic program visits Savage
The Howard County Police Department's youth division has developed a mobile Community Athletic Program that will visit Savage Park, 8600 Foundry St., every Tuesday until Aug. 21, excluding July 14 and July 28.
The CAP contains sports gear, games and video game equipment and is staffed by school resource officers and other youth services officers.
