Anne Arundel County Police shot a Hyattsville teenager Tuesday morning for allegedly appearing to reach for a weapon.
Around 3 a.m., an officer was called to the 3400 block of Andrew Court in Maryland City for a report of someone tampering with a vehicle.
The officer arrived and saw two suspects in a Dodge Durango. He parked behind the car and approached the two suspects when the 16-year-old male driver from Hyattsville backed up the car and hit the police car before pulling forward and doing it again, said police spokesman Justin Mulcahy.
The driver then got out of the car and made a quick movement to his waistband, when the officer, who was not identified, shot the driver twice, Mulcahy said.
A passenger in the vehicle fled on foot and the officer also noticed a nearby black Chrysler Concord, believed to bring the suspects to the scene, quickly drive away, Mulcahy said.
The teenaager who was shot by the officer was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly with non-life-threatening injuries. Mulcahy said he had no additional information Tuesday about where the teenager lives or if he has been released from the hospital.
The officer was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie to be examined for minor injuries. Mulcahy said he has no information about whether the officer has been released.
Mulcahy said police are asking anyone with information to call the Metro Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-866-756-2587.
