The Cheverly Community Market will run from 8 a.m. to noon July 11 and 25 at the Cheverly Community Center at 6401 Forest Road. The Hot Noodles, a local cover band, will perform. named Byrd Scholar
Adaku Idika, a Bladensburg High School student, was among 143 students statewide who were named Robert C. Byrd Scholars for 2009.
The students receive a four-year scholarship worth up to $1,500 a year for college. Principals from public and private high schools nominated students in the top 1 percent of graduating classes; more than 600 students were nominated. The Maryland State Department of Education gives the award to acknowledge achievement and help students pursue higher education.

Tara Mahoney, a Hyattsville resident, graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. in June. Mahoney earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the public university.

Alexandra Morrison, a Hyattsville resident, was named to the dean's list at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. for the spring 2009 semester. Morrison is the daughter of Christopher S. Morrison and Hillary C. Morrison of Hyattsville.

graduates basic training
Ciara M. Ward, the daughter of Riverdale resident Kendra Lewis, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Ward, a 2004 graduate of Parkdale High School, spent nine weeks training in physical fitness, basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare, rifle marksmanship, map reading, field tactics and other areas of study.
Jazz in Riverdale Park
The Jazz on the Portico concert series kicked off last week, with more shows on tap before the summer ends. Apothecary will perform at 7 p.m. July 29, playing instrumental music featuring an electric violin and songs inspired by folk, jazz, classic rock and Celtic music. MSG — The Acoustic Blues Trio will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 26. The group features Riverdale Park resident Miles Spicer. The Mall at Prince Georges' free jazz concert series continues this week with the Duende Quartet performing at 5 p.m. today in the food court. to area students
The Maryland 21st Century Community Learning Centers will hold a free summer math enrichment program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Aug. 11 Monday through Thursday at five schools: DuVal High School in Lanham, Gaywood Elementary in Seabrook, Thomas Claggett Elementary in District Heights, Thomas Johnson Middle in Lanham and Walker Mill Middle in Capitol Heights.
Targeted grades are rising fifth- through 12th-graders who will receive 90 minute math lessons and help with the Maryland School Assessment and High School Assessment. Gospel dance group opens floor up for new dancers
The Gospel Lights Liturgical Dance Ministry, a mother-daughter-led dance ministry, invites residents who want to become members of Gospel Lights to attend an orientation from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 15. Classes, which begin Sept. 5, will be held at Joe's Movement Emporium at 3309 Bunker Hill Road in Mount Rainier. Classes will end on the last Saturday in June 2010. The cost is $500 and can be paid in four installments of $125 over 10 months or all at once on Aug. 15.
