A 5-year-old girl drowned Friday at a pool in College Park, according to Prince George's County emergency officials.
Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department, said rescuers responded to a 911 call at about 2:15 p.m. at the Ellen Linson Swimming Pool.
The community swimming pool is run by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
Brady said the girl was participating in a day camp and was in a 2-feet-deep children's swimming area of the pool. He said a 10-year-old boy saw the girl at the bottom of the pool and pulled her to the surface. Brady did not know how long the girl was underwater.
The boy alerted lifeguards, who began CPR on the girl immediately. When paramedics arrived, they continued on the way to Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"We know she was with a number of kids associated with one of the summer camps and that it was a swim day," said Lt. Stanley Johnson, press information officer for Maryland Park Police, which handled the initial investigation.
Johnson said there were five lifeguards on duty at the center, which includes the 50-meter pool where the girl was swimming. The girl was swimming in the sectioned off lower end part at the two-foot depth, Johnson said.
Although the girl's name has not been released, Johnson said it was likely she was a county resident or had some ties to the county in order to participate in the summer camp.
