For one month only, the old-fashioned fun of July's First Saturday Great American Main Street Celebration will be held from 5–9 p.m. on Friday for an early Independence Day kick-off.
Hosted by the Downtown Frederick Partnership, the monthly event will feature classic games and activities including hula hoops and a visit from Elvis himself.
Downtown Frederick was honored in May of 2005 when the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center named it one of five Great American Main Street Award winners. Frederick is the first and only of Maryland's Main Street communities to be given this award.
To commemorate a time when main streets were in their heyday, this special First Saturday will feature nostalgic games for the young and young at heart. Elvis, the King of rock n' roll, will even make appearances throughout downtown to help celebrate the special occasion. He will have visitors all shook up when he serenades the masses.
Old fashioned game stations embracing great American past times such as watermelon seed spitting contests, limbo, bowling and more will be located throughout downtown. Visitors can enjoy twister, human tic-tac-toe and even a hotdog eating contest.
Hotdog eating contestants can sign-up for 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. sessions at the contest's location under the Carroll Creek Trellis near Market Street. During each session, five entrants will see who can eat the most hotdogs in 10 minutes. The victor from each session will win a $25 Downtown Frederick Gift Card redeemable at over 150 downtown stores, restaurants, salons and more.
While at the creek, visitors can also enjoy the third annual Great Frederick Float, an all-American red, white & blue celebration featuring a boat float and contest, live music and children's activities from 5–8 p.m. Attendees can vote on their favorite boat while enjoying tons of great entertainment including readings from historical figures, performances from the Ft. Detrick Color Guard, the Great Frederick Float Divas and more.
