A Beltsville banjo maker has received a $1,800 folk arts grant from the state.
Kevin Enoch, founder of Enoch Instruments in Beltsville, received an Apprenticeship Award from the Maryland State Arts Council and Maryland Historical Trust on June 22.
The Apprenticeship Awards were given to 10 master-apprentice teams in the state who practice folk and traditional arts.
Enoch, 52, received $1,800 to teach Pete Ross, of Baltimore, engraving and pearl inlay technique. Ross, 40, works part-time for Enoch and runs his own banjo-making business. He received $200 as part of the award.
"I'm so busy I can't afford the time to teach," Enoch said. "This should definitely help."
The apprenticeship will begin in July and end in June 2010.
July 4 carnival at College Park Woods Swim Club
The College Park Woods Swim Club will host a community carnival Saturday in College Park.
The event will last from 2 to 6 p.m. It will feature food including hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream available for purchase.
Attendees will also be able to buy tickets to participate in carnival games, face painting and other attractions.
Admission is free for swim club members, $5 for non-members and $3 for non-members under the age of 6. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

High Point High School
graduating seniors honored
Scholarship recipients from High Point High School in Beltsville were honored at the school's Senior Awards Night on May 20.
The ceremony celebrated the school's graduating seniors who had received academic or athletic awards and scholarships from a variety of sources, ranging from the state Senate and House of Delegates to private organizations to the school and its alumni.

Tree-planting program
wants resident input
College Park has a program that plants trees in the city's right-of-way areas and city officials are asking residents to suggest possible planting locations.
Right-of-ways include median strips and grass between curbs and sidewalks.
Residents can suggest a location by calling the City Horticulturist at 301-474-4194. City officials will inspect sites to determine whether they are suitable for planting.
High Point, UM graduate completes basic combat training
Army National Guard Spec. Michelle Kerr, a graduate of High Point High School in Beltsville, has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
During nine weeks of training, Kerr received instruction in areas including armed and unarmed combat, rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, drills and ceremonies and military courtesy and justice.
Kerr is a 1997 graduate of High Point. She also graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2002.
Kerr's mother is Ava Brydson, of Laurel.
Meeting to address
Route 1 development
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will host a community briefing Wednesday regarding its new Route 1 zoning plan in College Park.
The meeting will detail its preliminary plans for future development of the Route 1 corridor in College Park. Residents are invited to attend.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center's Gildenhorn Recital Hall, located on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park.

Health discussion
in Beltsville
The Prince George's County Health Department will host a Health Talk Town Forum July 16 in Beltsville.
Attendees will discuss a variety of personal and community health topics. Light refreshments will be served.
The forum will be held at 6 p.m. at the Beltsville Community Center, located at 3900 Sellman Road.
The Health Department will also host health discussions in Chillum on July 15, Bladensburg on July 22, Seat Pleasant on July 29, Bowie on Aug. 12 and Fort Washington on Aug. 19, 20 and 26. All forums will start at 6 p.m.

Beltsville resident makes Syracuse University dean's list
Syreeta Herbert, of Beltsville, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y.
Herbert, a sophomore fashion design major, made the list by completing 12 or more credits with a grade point average of 3.4 or higher.
She is a 2007 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt.
Greenbelt resident makes Savannah College dean's list
Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., recently announced its dean's list students for the final quarter.
Greenbelt resident Malcolm Barrett, a fashion major, made the list for averaging above a 3.5 GPA during the quarter.
Savannah College is a private, nonprofit accredited institution with campuses also in Atlanta and Lacoste, France.
University of Hartford dean's list includes Greenbelt native
The Connecticut-based University of Hartford has announced their spring dean's list. One of the students who made the list was Greenbelt resident Ashley Lee.
Lee was selected to the list for having a 3.5 GPA or higher for the spring semester.
Compost and mulch

The College Park Department of Public Works is selling compost and wood mulch to city residents.
Screened Smartleaf brand compost is available for $15.90 per cubic yard and wood mulch is available for $5.30 per cubic yard.
Materials can be picked up at the Public Works yard, located at 9217 51st Ave. in College Park from 8 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
