A house fire Monday morning in Silver Spring injured three, including two firefighters who were treated for minor burns.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 11:26 a.m. in the 10100 block of Lorain Avenue in Silver Spring and saw a fire in the basement. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes, said Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
Garcia said the fire caused smoke damage and significant damage in the basement area. The cause of the fire and the cost of damages are unknown, Garcia said.
An occupant of the single-family, three-story home was sent to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation, Garcia said. Two firefighters were treated for first- and second-degree burns; one firefighter had burns to the wrist, the other to the knee. All three injuries are minor, Garcia said.
The injured occupant of the home told firefighters that there could have been another person trapped, but firefighters were unable to find anyone. Garcia said each of the three stories of the home are rented and that he is unaware of how many people were living there.
"She knew the people living in the house but she didn't know their schedule," Garcia said.
Garcia added that while one smoke alarm was discovered, it was probably not working. Firefighters could not hear it when they arrived. The home needed two more alarms, he said.
"We do know that working fire alarms save [lives]," Garcia said.
