For the second day in a row, the Post 68 American Legion baseball team erased a Gaithersburg Post 104 lead en route to victory on Monday, this time battling back from five runs down to win, 10-7. On Sunday, they rallied from two runs down to win, 6-4.
"We started slow just like yesterday," said Jimmy Belfont, "then we got the bats going. We can fight back in a high scoring game."
Belfont was the biggest reason why, feasting on Post 104 pitching for the third time this season. He reached in all four trips to the plate with a walk, single and a hit by pitch. He also struck the game's biggest blow, a three-run homer deep into the left field trees at Damascus Regional Park, tying the game at seven in the fourth inning.
On Sunday, Belfont doubled and drove in two runs during his team's four-run sixth. He was just as clutch on June 8, hitting a walk-off, two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh.
He's had a partner in crime in each of Post 68's last two victories: Josh Leemhuis. The powerful number-three hitter homered twice on Sunday, with his two-run shot in the sixth giving his team the lead for good. He struggled on Monday until it mattered most, belting a two-run triple to the gap in right center in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Stephen Bonser earned the save, striking out the side in the seventh.
"If all of us are consistently hitting," said Leemhuis, "we can be the best team in the league, definitely."
Tim Riley tripled, singled twice and drove in two runs for Post 104, while Matt Miller also drove in two. Pat Luani belted a third-inning homer for Post 68, his third of the year.
