Shiane Dixon, who was riding in the cargo area of her mother's 2000 Lincoln Navigator, was the only one of the five occupants not wearing a seatbelt, Geller said. Police are investigating the cause of the 4:40 a.m. crash, Geller said.
Dixon "was an outstanding student" at Rocky Hill Middle School, said Principal Stephen Whiting. Whiting said he has known the family for six years and was trying to find a way to inform Dixon's classmates of her death. Dixon would have been in the eighth grade at the Clarksburg school.
"It's a shock," Whiting said. "It's not news you expect to hear."
Shiane's mother, Diane P. Dixon, was driving south on I-95 when she drove off the road, overcorrected and ran into a guardrail. The SUV then flipped four times near Petersburg, Va., Geller said. Diane Dixon was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University and Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond with life-threatening injuries, Geller said.
Shiane's brother Hassan Dixon, 16, a junior at Northwest High School was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Geller said. Family friends Jordan Lusane, 18, of Boyds and Taylor Scott, 12, of Damascus were taken by ambulance to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg with non-life threatening injuries, Geller said.
Shiane Dixon was a member of the Maryland Titans track club.
Hassan Dixon, also a member of the Titans, was named to the All-Gazette boys track and field first teams for indoor and outdoor this school year. He ran on Northwest High's Class 4A state-champion 4x400-meter relay teams during both seasons. He was also an honorable mention All-Gazette running back for the Jaguars' football team last fall. Lusane also played football with the Jaguars.
