Two services will be held this week for a Chevy Chase woman and a child who were killed when their car was struck by a falling tree branch on Connecticut Avenue on Friday evening.
Kelly M. Murray, 40, was driving a Toyota minivan with seven other female passengers southbound on Connecticut Avenue Friday evening at approximately 7:20 p.m. when it was hit by a tree branch during a thunderstorm near East West Highway, according to a statement from Montgomery County Police. The other passengers ranged in age from 10 months to 11 years.
Murray and her 7-year-old daughter Sloane were pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel who responded to the accident. All the other passengers in the vehicle were taken to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. with non-life threatening injuries.
"Throughout the county we were dealing with a lot of wires down, a lot of trees down," said Capt. Oscar Garcia of Fire and Rescue, referring to Friday evening.
A prayer service will take place at 7 p.m. at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 3630 Quesada Street in Northwest Washington, D.C., according to church spokeswoman Susan Gibbs. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Gibbs said.
Correction: This story originally misidentified the location of one memorial service as Most Blessed Sacrament Church. The correct name is Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
