After a few months’ delay, Capital Lighting and Supply Inc. broke ground on its new Forestville headquarters and distribution center this month.

The company, which provides products such as clocks, fans, ladders and lamps to commercial and residential customers, is now headquartered in Alexandria, Va. Its 220,000-square-foot project will be built in the Eastgate Business Park near the interchange of Pennsylvania Avenue and the Capital Beltway, by Andrews Air Force Base.

Osprey Development of Carson City, Nev., was initially slated to develop the property. But Capital Lighting has subsequently purchased the land and will be developing the project with Nardi Construction Inc. of Beltsville and Morgan Gick McBeath and Associates, an architectural firm in Fairfax, Va., said Tim McGowan, vice president of strategic planning.

The company initially sought to lease the property with an option to buy, but exercised its option early and chose to develop the site, McGowan said. This decision delayed the start of construction by a few months.

The 135 jobs the company will bring to the county are expected to grow to more than 200 positions.

Capital Lighting’s goal is to encourage its Virginia employees to transfer to Forestville, McGowan said, while adding workers from the county and region. The site was selected because of the available workforce and its proximity to major highways, helping the company serve customers in Maryland and Virginia, he said.

The building will be divided between 146,600 square feet of warehouse, and 33,600 square feet of leased space available for future expansion, McGowan said. That also includes a retail store.

An additional 40,000 square feet will include office, training and conference facilities.

‘‘Capital Lighting’s decision to relocate to Prince George’s County is a symbol that our county is growing and has the right environment for businesses to grow,” County Executive Jack B. Johnson (D) said in a company statement.
