Collins goes with familiar feeling

Recent Quince Orchard High graduate Kevin Collins called his decision to sign with Towson University ‘‘the best choice for me.” Considering how many players he knows on the Tigers’ squad, that’s understandable.

‘‘I know a lot of people up there,” Collins said. ‘‘My brother [Matt Collins] goes up there. I feel like I’ll have a good time up there. I fit in.”

Besides Matt Collins, a rising sophomore outfielder, the Tigers boast former Montgomery County players Kyle Skellchock, Brian Conley, Greg Furmanek, Hans Falkenhan and Austin Hurd.

Kevin Collins played alongside Conley and his older brother at Quince Orchard and with Skellchock on the Gaithersburg Post 295 American Legion team. He played against Hurd (Gaithersburg High, Gaithersburg Post 104) throughout his high-school and legion careers.

Collins, Quince Orchard’s starting center fielder the last two years, helped guide the Cougars to a 19-2 record and their first state championship in 2005, batting .516 with 10 doubles, three triples, 20 runs batted in and 30 runs that season. This spring, he hit .368 with nine doubles, three triples, 18 RBI, 30 runs and 15 stolen bases, helping the Cougars to a 21-1 mark and the 4A state semifinals.

Collins has also been one of the forces behind Post 295’s recent domination of the county’s legion scene, including three straight county titles and a pair of state championships.
