True to form, the AT&T Wireless Caddie that updates fans on standings, stats and even where to find a snack has updated, well, itself.
The Caddie devices, unveiled at the inaugural AT&T National in 2007, will this year be issued on the BlackBerry Bold mobile phone, a sleek adjustment from the old devices that some spectators complained were bulky.
In addition to providing course maps and standings, the gizmo also provides games and allows access to AT&T content like messaging.
The Caddies will be issued on a first-come first-served basis at the tournament's front entrance, as well as at the AT&T Digital Clubhouse alongside the 11th fairway.
The Digital Clubhouse, meanwhile, will serve as the tournament's tech oasis, where spectators can take a break with a digital driving range that estimates shot force, watch HDTV and access the Internet.
Those following the action from home will be able to enjoy other cell phone gadgets, unlike their counterparts on the course who are barred from bringing them in. Any cell phone user looking for leaderboard updates can text "Golf" to 21234 to get them in real time.
Finally, for those as interested in being Tiger Woods as watching him, check out the iPhone Tiger Woods PGA application from EA Sports, which allows users to play golf either as or against Tiger. Unfortunately, Congressional Country Club is not among the seven courses offered on the application.
