An MS-13 gang member will serve more than 12 years in prison for trying to kill a Hyattsville man in Adelphi in 2008.
On June 17, Prince George's County Circuit Court Judge Michael P. Whalen sentenced Jamie Arturo Alvarado, 21, of El Salvador to 25 years in prison, but suspended 12½ years of the sentence, according to the Prince George's County state's attorney's office.
Alvarado will serve his 12-year, 6-month sentence before being detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service for deportation, said Sharon Dukes, spokeswoman for Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D).
According to the state's attorney's office, Juan Francisco Hernandez-Gonzales, 43, of Hyattsville, was talking to Alvarado's niece in the parking lot of Lane Manor Community Recreation Center in Adelphi on July 23, 2008. Alvarado was looking inside of his niece's car, and when she asked him what he was doing, he walked toward the pair with a knife. Hernandez-Gonzales ran and Alvarado chased him, stabbed him and continued attacking him after he fell to the ground.
According to Dukes, Alvarado is associated with MS-13 but the crime wasn't gang-related.
Alvarado's attorney, Daniel Moskov, could not be reached for comment.
