The College Park Committee for a Better Environment honored David Rogner, a recent University of Maryland graduate, with a Green Award in recognition of his environmental activism. College Park Mayor Stephen Brayman and committee co-chairs Pamela Toschik and Stephen Jascourt were on hand to present Rogner with the award.
Rogner helped found and manage on-campus groups UMD Students for Clean Energy and the Student Sustainability Council. He also served in the past year as the environmental affairs liaison for the university's student government association.
Rogner graduated last month with a bachelor's degree in environmental management.
Beltsville residents
receive diplomas
Travis Frank and Justin Wasno, of Beltsville, graduated from St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C. on June 5.
The graduation ceremony for the school's 247-member graduating class was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
Both students were members of the National Honor Society.
University Park native makes Dean's List at Stonehill College
Stonehill College, a Catholic institution near Boston, recently announced its spring Dean's List. Sarah Dickerson, a University Park resident, was among the honorees.
Dickerson is a rising junior at Stonehill and earned the distinction by maintaining over a 3.5 GPA. Hyattsville resident Philip Calabro, who was a part of the latest graduating class at Stonehill, also made the Dean's List.
Local residents graduate
from William and Mary
Four students from the county have graduated from The College of William and Mary, including one resident from Beltsville.
Rachel Morris, a Beltsville native graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also was a member of the synchronized swim club.
Other Prince George's County graduates from William and Mary include Tara Mahoney of Hyattsville, Christopher Osterhout of Bowie and Calisa Smith of Bowie.
Prince George's County students among Byrd Honors Scholars
The Maryland Department Education named the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars for 2009, including 11 students from county high schools.
The program honors students nominated by their principals who are in the top 1 percent of their graduating class and demonstrate excellence and achievement. Each recipient will be given a four-year scholarship to any institution of higher learning they attend for up to $1,500 per year.
This year's county honorees are: Delphia Varadarajan, Eleanor Roosevelt High School; Jazmine Ferguson, Frederick Douglass High School; Marcus Taylor, High Road Academy of Prince George's County; Bianca Giosa, Bowie High School; Adaku Idika, Bladensburg High School; Mehron Price, The Calverton School; Guadalupe Osorio, Fairmont Heights High School; Samuel Barham, Annapolis Area Christian School; Atsoh Achirimofor, Laurel High School; Dwayne Winslow, Surrattsville High School; and Kayla Fowler, Laurel High School.
"Maryland has the great fortune of having scores of talented young people at our high schools, and this program gives us a chance to celebrate their incredible accomplishments," said Nancy S. Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools, in a press release. "This program provides important financial help as our students prepare to further their education."
In all, 143 students out of over 600 candidates were selected as Byrd Scholars throughout the state for their scholastic efforts.
New College Park church building to be dedicated
After several years of construction, Wallace Presbyterian Church will officially dedicate its new building at the corner of University Boulevard and Metzerott Road at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The church is the third building in the Wallace Presbyterian congregation's 100-year history. It replaces the Hyattsville location the congregation has been housed in for the last 50 years.
"Our congregation is very excited to begin worshipping in our new building," said the Rev. Scott Bridges, senior pastor of Wallace, in a press release. "For years, we have been looking forward to ministering to the needs of the College Park community, especially given our congregation's long history of reaching out to University of Maryland students."
At the dedication, former and current Wallace members and ministers will gather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the building, refreshments and music.
Beltsville native
named to Dean's List
Robert Baez of Beltsville was named to the Dean's List at West Virginia Wesleyan College for the past semester. He earned the distinction by maintaining a GPA above 3.5 with at least 12 credits.
West Virginia Wesleyan College is a private institution located in Buckhannon, W.V.
College Park and UM host Fourth of July Celebration
On July 4, the city of College Park and the University of Maryland will present its annual Fourth of July Celebration, featuring a concert, concessions and fireworks.
Starting at 5 p.m., city residents and students alike are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and coolers to Lot 1 on the university campus. Food and drinks will be available at concession stands on location.
At 7 p.m., musical guest The Fabulous Hubcaps will be featured in concert, followed by a traditional fireworks display after sunset. Attendance is free.
Beltsville resident graduates from York College
Benjamin Warner of Beltsville graduated from York College in York, Pa. on May 16.
Warner, 21, received a bachelor's degree in marketing with a minor in Spanish. He plans to seek a career in marketing and advertising.
Warner is a 2005 graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville.
His parents are Craig and Marcia Warner of Beltsville.
