Two people are in the hospital and eight others are in custody today after gunshots rang out in the King Farm neighborhood of Rockville early this morning.
Montgomery County Police say one person was shot in the upper body and another person was stabbed during a home invasion and assault in an apartment in the 400 block of Elmcroft Boulevard, about a block from Frederick Road (Route 355). The identities of the victims are unknown at this time.
Cpl. Stephen Galloza, a county police spokesman, said five investigators are in the neighborhood conducting interviews.
"We're kind of figuring it all out now," he said.
The two victims were taken to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to survive, Galloza said.
The invasion occurred around 2:30 a.m. Police had been tailing a suspicious vehicle into the area when they stumbled upon the scene, he said.
He did not know if the vehicle and the incident are related and it is not known whether the victims are residents of King Farm or part of the group of assailants.
Police saw an unknown number of people force their way into the ground-floor apartment and heard several gunshots from inside shortly after, Galloza said.
A handgun was used in the shooting, he said.
Police chased the suspects on foot through the neighborhood and eventually rounded up eight people, Galloza said. It was unclear how many of those eight were suspects and how many were persons of interest to the investigation, he said.
The neighborhood was quiet this morning with only an unmarked police car parked in front of the apartment and a piece of plywood covering a broken window, hinting at the violence that occurred hours before.
