Player of the Year

Robbie Mathias

Liberty, Sr., P

Mathias probably would have a place on this team if he’d never thrown a pitch: He batted .413 with 25 RBI and 19 runs, with a .524 on-base percentage. But what makes him our Player of the Year is his arm: in 65 1⁄3 innings pitched, he struck out 83 batters and walked only 12, with a 2.14 earned-run average. His prowess on the mound led Liberty to its second state tournament in three seasons.

Coach of the Year

Erik Barnes

Liberty, 8th year

Barnes calls his team’s state championship two years ago his proudest moment in high school baseball, but this year was a close second as the Lions overcame early-season chemistry issues to go 15-6 and land in the state semifinals.

Wes GrossFrederick, Sr., P

Gross was the best pitcher in Frederick County with a record of 7-2 with 78 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.52; he also wielded a tough bat, going .323 with 20 hits.

Jason RawlingsLiberty, Sr., P

Rawlings came on at the end of the year and Liberty was the beneficiary: Besides his .317 average and 14 RBI, he threw 51 1⁄3 innings with a 2.86 ERA, 29 strikeouts—and just five walks.

Dan GerjetsSouth Carroll, Sr., P⁄1B

Gerjets was an offensive force this year with a .403 average and 31 hits, including nine doubles; he also had three wins on the mound, a 1.12 ERA and 61 strikeouts.

Justin PowellLinganore, Sr., SS

Powell was a .379 hitter with 25 hits and 11 RBI, and was named the 2006 Mid-Maryland All-Star Classic Big School Most Valuable Player.

Jake ThompsonLiberty, Sr., IF

With a .473 average and .537 on-base percentage, Thompson was yet another big-bat threat for the Lions; he had 21 RBI and 10 runs.

Matt GreeneSouth Carroll, Jr., IF

Greene led his team in all but one hitting category, smacking a Piedmont Conference-best 39 hits with five doubles, two triples and three home runs; he had 21 RBI and was .500 on the year.

Brandon WhippTuscarora, Jr., IF

Whipp was a .451 hitter with 32 hits, including nine doubles, all tops in the Chesapeake Conference. He added three homers and 28 RBI, and three wins and a save on the mound.

Rob HollaschLiberty, Sr., C

Hollasch was the area’s top backstop, calling pitches for Mathias and Rawlings while providing a .420 bat with 14 RBI and 22 runs.

Steven RiceCentury, Sr., OF

Rice was one of the few bright spots for the 4-16 Knights, hitting .358 with 15 runs and 13 walks; he smacked five home runs and had a .792 slugging percentage.

Ty MainMiddletown, Jr., OF

Main hit .459 with 28 hits and 18 RBI in 61 plate appearances; he also could fill in on the mound, striking out 29 batters with a 3.16 ERA.

Adam DelauterCatoctin, Sr., OF

Delauter hit .440 and was a key cog in the Cougars’ run to the state semifinals, where they lost a 2-1 decision to Bohemia Manor.

Jake YocumCatoctin, Sr., UT

Yocum mostly made his mark for the Cougars on the mound, where he pitched 57 innings and had an ERA of 2.00; but he was a steady presence in the oufield as well, and led Catoctin with a .498 average.
