History
Founded in 1880, Brunswick was originally called Berlin, but changed its name after it was discovered that an Eastern Shore town shared the same name.
The City of Brunswick, located in the southwestern region of Frederick County, is loyal to its railroad heritage. It holds an annual festival celebrating its railroad history every October. The city is also home to the Brunswick Railroad Museum. Nearly 750 commuters come to the city to ride the MARC train to work every day.
Brunswick is working to establish itself as a regional trade center for communities surrounding the city, and is striving to attract new businesses and revitalize the downtown area.
A variety of community events spark up life in the city, including a Fourth of July celebration and a Veterans Day parade in November. Many parks and recreation programs are available in the city that is known as the ‘‘Home of the Iron Horse.”
Brunswick was approved last year for the Main Street Maryland program, which focuses on economic renewal for businesses in the downtown area on Potomac Street between First and Maryland avenues and on South Maryland Avenue, South Maple Avenue and Railroad Square.
