History
Northeast of Frederick City sits the Town of Walkersville, which for years was considered one of the fastest-growing communities in Frederick County.
With an estimated 5,600 residents, Walkersville has seen tremendous changes since it was chartered in 1892.
That year, Walkersville boasted several grocery stores, blacksmiths, harness shops, tin-roofing shops and warehouses. By the early 20th century, the addition of a cannery, an ice factory, a bakery, a meat market and a clothing factory changed Walkersville from a rural farming community to a bustling town of stately homes, a public school and beautiful churches. Five historic churches, including four still in use today, contribute to the historic significance and beauty of the town.
Handling the rapid growth has been an ongoing challenge for town officials. From 1970 to 2000, the population more than tripled.
Today, Walkersville blends the old with the new. Several new housing developments and retail business establishments surround the historic ‘‘Old Town” area. Farmland continues to border the outskirts of town.
