History
In 1790, William Plummer built a house along what is now Main Street in New Market. The Quaker joined with Nicholas Hall to lay out the small town in 1793. They auctioned off lots that year, selling the first to William Ballenger.
People traveled along the National Pike (Main Street) as early as 1783, and so did their children, flocks of turkeys and herds of sheep. In the early years of the last century the big-wheeled, six-horse Conestoga wagons were frequent visitors on their way to the Ohio country and beyond.
New Market still welcomes travelers withÊbed and breakfast inns that host visitors from many states and countries. However, now the town, dubbed the “Antiques Capital of Maryland,“Êis catering more to tourists and has recenlty launched a campaign toÊattract more day visitors.Ê
The townÊwith its dozens of antique shops have madeÊit Êfamous was recognized in 1975 when it was officially entered in the National Register as an historic district.
With a state-funded Streetscape project of road improvements in the works, New Market officials want toÊmodernize the street with new sidewalks and streetlamps.
