History
Nestled in Middletown Valley along Old National Pike, seven miles west of Frederick, Middletown has grown from the agricultural community it once was.
The town has a population of 2,668, according to the 2000 Census.
Middletown was first settled by English and German settlers in about 1740. The property was sold to Michael Jesserong for 66 English pounds. Jesserong named the valley Middletown and sold the first lots in the town in 1767, officially marking the town's founding.
The town celebrates its founding each year at the Middletown Heritage Weekend in late September.
Middletown is also dedicated to the preservation of its Civil War heritage. It is the headquarters of Central Maryland Heritage League, an organization devoted to saving Civil War battlefields, not only in Middletown, but throughout the United States.
Both Union and Confederate troops walked in Middletown during the Civil War as they proceeded to South Mountain and Antietam. The town then opened its churches and homes to serve as hospitals after the battle.
Middletown continues to grow with the addition of new neighborhoods including Glenbrook and Foxfield and attracts visitors because of its small-town charm and stately Victorian Homes. Visitors can tour an early 19th-century home, one-room museum and a genealogy library on Sundays during May to October at the Middletown Valley Historical Society on West Main Street that features a genealogy library available for research.
Along with its churches, restaurants and small retail shops, Middletown also boasts some of the best golf courses in Maryland.
