The driver of a dump truck accidentally backed into and killed a construction worker from Landover on Thursday night, according to Prince George's County police.
The accident happened at 10:16 p.m. in the 6300 block of Central Avenue, in Capitol Heights, said Capt. Mistinette Mintz, a county police spokeswoman.
Mintz identified the construction worker as Walter Edward Izzard III, 60, of the 3500 block of Hubbard Road. She identified the driver of the dump truck as Jamaal Rahim Lewis, 33, of the 1900 block of Belle Haven Drive in Landover.
Lewis did not see Izzard before striking him, Mintz said. Izzard was pronounced dead at the scene, she added.
Izzard was working for Fort Myer Construction Corp., a Washington, D.C.-based construction company, which was onsite to resurface westbound Central Avenue, Mintz said. Fort Myer Construction subcontracted Lewis' dump truck through his employer, Clinton-based SJ Son Construction and Trucking, she added.
Fort Myer Construction spokesman Chris Kearns was not immediately available for comment Friday. SJ Son Construction and Trucking officials could not be reached Friday.
Police had no information about how many other workers were at the scene when the incident occurred, Mintz said.
Police are investigating the incident and have filed no charges in connection with it, Mintz said.
"The way it reads to me, it was a complete accident," she said.
