Lane shifts are slated to begin Saturday along Redland Road and Interstate 370 in Derwood as construction continues on the Intercounty Connector, State Highway Administration officials announced.
Motorists along Redland Road traveling south from Muncaster Mill Road will be shifted to the permanent alignment of the ICC, onto a new bridge over the future 18-mile toll road.
Traffic along I-370 near Shady Grove Road will also experience a shift Saturday, weather-permitting. The temporary realignment of I-370 will allow crews to continue construction on an ICC bridge.
Both projects were slated to begin about two weeks ago, but were pushed back several times because of the amount of rain the region has received, David Buck, a State Highway Administration spokesman, said.
"It's been a challenge with all of this rain keeping these projects on schedule, but overall construction on the ICC is still on track," he said.
On Redland Road, approximately 150 feet south of the bridge, lanes will narrow and shift slightly west to facilitate reconstruction of the Shady Grove Presbyterian Church parking lot and work on the remainder of Redland Road, officials reported.
Weather permitting, crews will begin the project at noon Saturday. The Redland Road shift should be in place by 6 p.m. The I-370 shift will begin at 5 a.m. and should be in place by late Saturday evening.
More than 3,000 feet of westbound I-370 will be shifted between the Shady Grove Road overpass and the bridge over the CSX railroad tracks.
The speed limit in the construction zone will be 40 miles per hour.
Both projects are part of the first section of the ICC, from I-370 to east of Georgia Avenue in Olney. The 7.2-mile segment is 45 percent complete and slated to open in late 2010 or early 2011, according to the State Highway Administration.
