Asian-American nonprofit names new directorAsian American Lead has named Rosetta Lai as its new executive director. Lai has most recently served as the organization’s interim executive director since October 2007 and previously as vice president of development and external affairs, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization, which has an office in Wheaton. The organization, which works to increase the opportunities and ability of low-income Asian American children to move out of poverty and become successful, self-sufficient adults, recruited Lai in September 2005 to oversee resource development and external outreach. Before that, she worked in the corporate sector for 20 years at global companies such as Motorola, SRA⁄IBM and NCS⁄Pearson. At those companies, she helped business units improve organizational effectiveness. Her work took her around the country and the Asia Pacific region. She has served as president of the Organization of Chinese Americans, Chicago Chapter in the 1980s and as the national president of the Organization of Chinese American Women. In other nonprofit roles, Lai worked as dean of women at Lake Forest Academy in Chicago and the academic dean at St Mary’s Academy in South Bend, Ind. She holds an master’s degree in sociology from University of Notre Dame and a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Mary’s College, both located in Notre Dame, Ind. Verizon opens FiOS storein Wheaton Verizon on Monday opened a new retail store at 11006 Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton to showcase and sell fiber-optics products such as FiOS Internet, FiOS TV and FiOS TV DVR. Verizon representatives are on hand to demonstrate services and answer questions. The new store also will serve as a customer service center where Verizon customers can swap FiOS TV set-top boxes, pick up remote controls and HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) cables, pay bills, or consult with representatives. The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. County chamber to hold golf tournament The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce golf tournament, lunch and dinner will be held 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. July 14 at Lakewood Country Club, 13901 Glen Mill Road, Rockville.
