Linganore’s Katie Schafer is the 2007 All-Gazette Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

After winning just two matches in 2006, the Lancers skipper encouraged her charges to work hard over the off season, and it showed. Linganore finished second in the MVAL’s Chesapeake Conference with a 14-2 mark.

Player of the Year

Katie Schafer

Linganore

In her junior season, Schafer helped lead her team to a one-year dramatic turnaround. She captured the Frederick County singles title, placed second in Region I competition and finished second in the state tourney.

nBrittany Bolster, Liberty

As a junior, the three-time Carroll County and Region VII champion helped lead the Lions to a second-place finish in the MVAL’s Piedmont Conference.

nEmily Maerz, Middletown

Teamed with twin brother Tommy to earn a berth in the state mixed doubles tournament with a Region tournament first-place finish and was a standout a No. 2 singles.

nLindsey Main, Middletown,

Was 12-5 at No. 1 singles for the Knights, named first team All- Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

nHanna Poffenbarger, Walkersville

Qualified for state tournament in mixed doubles with Tim Nicodemus by finishing second in the region. Was 12-6 playing at No. 1singles for the Lions.

nBethany Springer, Thomas Johnson

University of Maryland-bound volleyball player was the top-seed at the state tennis tournament. Aadvanced to the quarterfinals after winning the Region I tourney.

nKatherine Zoulias⁄Stacey Niehof, TJ

County and region champs went all the way to the state quarterfinals.

nErin Popa⁄Sam Scurci, South Carroll

Tandem won the Carroll County championship as well as the Region VII title, advancing to the state tourney.

nLani Koener⁄Michelle Voight, Urbana

Placed second in the Frederick County tourney as well as the region tournament.
