Incubator firms honoredTwo biodefense companies were among those winning Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards from the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Maryland Technology Development Corp., RSM McGladrey Inc. and Saul Ewing LLP on Tuesday. *Life Science Company of the Year is Integrated BioTherapeutics in the Frederick Innovative Technology Center incubator. It creates vaccines and immunotherapeutics for diseases such as staph infections and the Ebola and Marburg viruses. *Graduate Company of the Year is PharmAthene, formerly of the Chesapeake Innovation Center in Annapolis. PharmAthene develops countermeasures to potential biological and chemical weapons. *Information Technology Company of the Year is Millennial Media in Baltimore’s Emerging Technology Center, which delivers mobile advertising systems. *Technology Service Company of the Year is Government Contracts Consultants in the Garrett Information Enterprise Center in McHenry. It provides IT and training support services to government agencies. Three companies in the Technology Advancement Program at the University of Maryland, College Park, were recognized: *New Incubator Company of the Year is AccuStrata, which offers a patented system for manufacturing multilayer thin films. *Technology Transfer Company of the Year is Zymetis, which uses a bacterium found in the Chesapeake Bay that could be used to produce ethanol. *Homeland Security Company of the Year is TRX Systems, which offers miniature electronic sensors and signal processing techniques for personally worn, location-aware devices. *Also, the Robert A. Spar Hall of Fame inducted Visicu, formerly in Baltimore’s Emerging Technology Center. It provides remote monitoring systems for hospital intensive care units.
