Christ Episcopalis going green

To increase its commitment to becoming a green school, Christ Episcopal School has created an outdoor classroom and children’s garden in the courtyard of the school on Jefferson Street in Rockville.

The classes have created a garden that will provide multiple opportunities to enhance the curriculum at every grade level. Some of the projects include a ladybug house, a welcome garden and a butterfly garden. A wildlife inventory will be conducted.

Ground was broken on May 5 and plants are up and prospering. Corn, runner beans and squash, ‘‘The Three Sisters of Life” to Native Americans, are growing well, school officials say.

All students are working cooperatively with parent volunteers, faculty and Principal Jane Pontius to develop learning in the urban garden and to gain respect for living organisms.

The students in Camp Cardinal, a summer program, will care for the garden from June to September. In September, next year’s kindergarten will harvest the plants as they learn about the exchange between Native Americans and European settlers.

In preparing the beds, the children discovered pottery shards of ironstone and porcelain dating to 1820.
