Post 295 baseball gets back to .500As many grizzled veterans of sports will say, it doesn’t matter how you start as much as how you finish. Rick Price, manager of Gaithersburg Post 295’s American Legion baseball team, hopes that is the truth. After starting the year 1-3, Post 295 has rallied to win three of its last four games, including a 10-6 over Laurel at Marriott’s Ridge High on Monday, to get back to .500. ‘‘We still are making mistakes defensively,” Price said. ‘‘That is still pretty shaky, but we have been getting great pitching of late. Everybody we throw out there has pitched well.” Leading that charge has been Mike Ryan, who has won two of three decisions. Charlie Cononie (1-1), John Brock (1-1) and Kyle Judson (1-0) have all pitched effectively as well. What has limited Gaithersburg Post 295’s success rate, though, have been uncharacteristic errors in the field. Many of these players are accomplished high-school players, but in the span of that season, they might play two or three games a week. Over the last eight days, Gaithersburg has played eight games, and building stamina has been an issue. ‘‘A lot of those mistakes we are making are catching and throwing mistakes,” Price said. ‘‘Maybe that has something to do with summer, and getting adjusted. Fixing that just comes down to practice. These are good players and eventually they will settle in.” One thing the team will have to get used to are long road trips. On June 2, Gaithersburg traveled to La Plata, and after barely stretching their legs from the long, one-plus-hour drive, the tired squad dropped a 5-4 decision. It was Gaithersburg’s third one-run loss of the young season. ‘‘You can pin that loss on the travel,” Price said. ‘‘They just aren’t used to taking such long trips to play. But, we were able to take a long trip [on Monday] and we did fine. They are starting to get used to the schedule.” The trips will get a little longer, as Gaithersburg Post 295 will take its annual trip at the end of June to compete in the Blue-Gold Classic in Utica, N.Y. Post 295 hopes to bring its hitting prowess, which has been on since the start of the season, with it. Kevin Johnson and Kyle Ehret have 10 runs batted in each, and John Krayilng has added some pop from the bottom of the order, driving in six RBI from the eighth spot in the lineup. Ryan (.450 batting average) and Brock (.390) have also been hitting the ball well. ‘‘We’re getting there,” Price said. ‘‘We’re going to be working on some things, but the guys are getting used to each other, and things are starting to work out.”
