County students honored for community service

Several Montgomery County students have earned U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen‘s Public Service Awards for outstanding community service.

Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington established the program to recognize graduating students in area high schools for their contributions to their school and⁄or to their community. Each school in Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District was invited to select a student.

County students winNational Merit scholarships

Sixteen Montgomery County students have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, according to a news release from Montgomery County Public Schools.

The colleges sponsor finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

Another group of college-sponsored Merit Scholars will be announced July 14.

The winners, their intended career fields and scholarship sponsors are:

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School: John R. Stevens, economics, New York University

Montgomery Blair High School: Andrew W. Kannan, computer science, University of Maryland; Kun Li, engineering, University of Maryland; Seth S. Reeker, law, Arizona State University

Winston Churchill High School: Michael W. Groeneman, economics, Carleton College; Kevin M. Levine, medical science, Washington University in St. Louis

Clarksburg High School: John T. Garvey, electrical engineering, University of Maryland

John F. Kennedy High School: Claire E. Crabtree, education (music), Florida State University

Kennedy foundation to host fundraising golf tourney

The John F. Kennedy High School Educational Foundation invites the public to participate in the first annual Cavalier Classic Golf Tournament 9 a.m. Oct. 17 at Hampshire Greens Golf Course in Silver Spring.

The registration fee is $150 per golfer, or $500 per foursome. Registration includes greens fees, golf cart, and post-golf awards lunch. Prizes will be awarded, and a limited amount of corporate sponsorships are also available.

The Kennedy High School Educational Foundation was launched in September 2007 to support the people and programs at Kennedy High School. In its first four months of existence, the JFK Ed Foundation, founded by a small group of JFK parents, alumni, staff and local business leaders, has created an alumni network, a local business network, and raised more than $40,000 for the school.

Scholarships awarded

Chris Jennison, a Silver Spring resident and a 2008 graduate of the Communication Arts Program at Montgomery Blair High School, has been awarded a Chrysler Foundation Scholarship for academic merit and a $1,000 scholarship by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, recognizing excellence in video production. He will be attending Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in the fall and will major in television⁄radio⁄film.

Amir Shah, one of Springbrook High School’s AOIT (Academy of Information Technology) juniors, has been awarded the Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal and Scholarship. If Shah chooses to attend RIT, this guarantees him a scholarship of at least $3,000 per year in addition to Merit scholarships, according to a news release from the school.
