Poolesville High applauded for ‘green’ practicesPoolesville High School was one of 36 schools across the state to be designated as a Maryland Green School this year for its environmental management practices on campus. The school was recognized by the nonprofit Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education at its 10th annual awards ceremony May 29 in Catonsville and received a native bald cypress tree from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, which it plans to plant in the school’s wetlands. Laura Gilfrich and Katie Stamm, students in Poolesville’s Global Ecology magnet program, helped obtain the certification by documenting the ways the school teaches about the environment in different subject areas as part of their senior project. Other county schools receiving the designation were Chevy Chase Elementary, Christ Episcopal in Rockville, Clarksburg Elementary, East Silver Spring Elementary, Oakland Terrace Elementary in Silver Spring, Piney Branch Elementary in Takoma Park and Takoma Park Middle.
