Coach of the Year

Alton Lightsey, Wootton, 4th year; Surprised county by leading group of mostly freshmen and sophomores, with just one senior, to 12-5 record, region tournament seed.

Player of the Year

Dana Ward, Sherwood, Sr., P; Shippensburg-bound lefty led team to state tournament with 243 strikeouts, 16 shutouts and 0.28 ERA. Also batted .507 with 24 RBI.

First team

*Kelly Burnett, Quince Orchard, Sr., OF; Vocal leader powered Cougars to second consecutive regional semifinal with .500 average and highlight-reel defensive plays.

*Kelly Callan, Springbrook, Sr., P; Did it all, racking up 131 strikeouts, 11-7 record, team-high .500 batting average, 5 HR and .964 slugging percentage.

*Rebecca Einstein, Quince Orchard, Sr., P; Missed early part of season with torn ankle ligaments, but rebounded to strike out 91 in 11 games and produce .400 average, 13 RBI.

*Allison Gost, Poolesville, Jr., C; Gunned down 11 of 12 runners trying to steal. Batted .484, including 12-game hitting streak, with 20 RBI and only struck out once.

*Amanda Kibbe, Gaithersburg, Sr., 2B; Team-high .614 average with 22 RBI and outstanding fielding percentage.

*Becca Kirshner, Gaithersburg, Jr., SS; Possesses possibly the strongest throwing arm of any player in county, making her one of the best in the field. She was one of the best at the plate too batting .485 with 21 RBI.

*Kelly Morrow, Sherwood, Jr., OF; Feisty outfielder tracked everything hit her way, then caught it, finishing with 1.000 fielding percentage. Leadoff batter hit .444 with 25 runs and 17 RBI.

*Katie Obal, Sherwood, Sr., C; Standout backstop went error-free on defense and boasted .469 batting average with 25 RBI.

*Amanda Ray, Damascus, Jr., 1B; Magnet at first base, didn’t commit a single error in 106 opportunities. Batted .411 with 29 RBI for regional champs.

*Allison Rubin, Blair, Sr., OF; Powered Blazers to first-ever 4A West Region final with .500 average, 21 RBI, 2 HR and 24 stolen bases. Will play at Delaware State.

*Ellen Smith, Damascus, Sr., 3B; Helped Swarmin’ Hornets to second regional title in three years with .458 average, 5 HR and 26 RBI.

*Rachel Stream, Poolesville, Jr., P⁄SS; Offensive sparkplug batted .524 with 4 HR, 23 RBI. Left natural shortstop position, leading team to regional final from pitching circle.

*Anna Szapiro, Blair, Sr., SS; Anchored Blazers’ strong infield with good fielding percentage, and helped on offense with .473 average, 12 RBI, 7 stolen bases.

*Taylor Wyatt, Damascus, Soph., SS; Reliable in clutch, batted .338 with 6 HR and added .solid defensive play.

Second team

*Erin Bloodgood, Clarksburg, Soph., C⁄SS; Batted team-high .527 with 20 RBI to lead Coyotes to 8-10 record in inaugural season.

*Annie Denenberg, Blair, Sr., P; Fought emotional turmoil (her mother passed away during Spring Break) in producing 14-3 record, 91 strikeouts and .431 batting average.

*Amy Ferguson, Paint Branch, Sr., 3B; Helped Panthers to No. 2 seed in 3A West Region tourney with .500 average, 13 RBI, .925 fielding percentage.

*Karah Kuczarski, GC, Soph., C; Solid behind plate and on offense, where she batted .330 with team-high 15 RBI.

*Katelyn Kumm, Churchill, Sr., SS; Cornerstone of Bulldogs’ best season in four years, batted .469 with 20 runs, 9 RBI and 16 stolen bases.

*Kathy Holonich, Sherwood, Jr., OF; Able to track down just about anything hit her direction, committing three errors. Hit .344 with team-high 27 RBI.

*Stephanie Hudlow, Damascus, Soph., OF; Crafty at plate, slapped and bunted way to .379 average with 12 RBI. Reliable in outfield with only two errors.

*Jackie LeMar, Seneca Valley, Jr., OF; Leadoff hitter compiled .983 fielding percentage, .453 batting average, 25 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, 14 RBI.

*Dani McClay, Blair, Sr., 1B; Always reliable, posted .978 fielding percentage and .472 batting average with 15 RBI.

*Sarah Meleney, RM, Sr., 3B; Great bat, led team to 12-6 record with .500 average.

*Kelly Phillips, Q. Orchard, Sr., OF; Equally strong on offense and defense, made some inspired plays in left field and hit .420 with 17 RBI and 20 runs.

*Erin Nickell, Damascus, Sr., P; Held opposing batters quiet to compile 12-3 record and batted .392 with 23 RBI, 4 HR to lead Damascus to second state tournament final in three years.

*Shannon Price, Sherwood, Sr., 1B; Reliable second-year starter finished with .975 fielding percentage and .385 batting average.

*Jessica Rinn, Wootton, Jr., 3B; Scored 21 runs on .471 average, committed four errors in 110 innings for .927 fielding percentage.

*Taylor Stockinger, Sherwood, Soph., SS; Stalwart in middle infield, committed just one error; strong on offense with .355 batting average and 21 RBI.
