Sixth grade students at Neelsville Middle School in Germantown worked on a Sea Perch project with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division. They recently tested the underwater robots they made at the Carderock center.
Sea Perch is a kit that teaches underwater robotics through engineering, science and math and aims to show minority and female students career opportunities in those subjects. The program is part of the Office of Naval Research’s initiative, ‘‘Recruiting the Next Generation of Naval Architects.”
The students build a remotely-operated underwater vehicle from PVC pipe and other materials, according to a statement from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
