Quince Orchard webmasters are tops

Quince Orchard High School won the ‘‘Best of the Web” award as the top public high school Web site in Montgomery County during the second annual county school web-awards ceremony last month.
The site, www.qohs.org, is managed by computer science teacher Jason Leveille and web development and design students.
The annual awards recognize school Web sites that model best practices in web communications.
The school system’s more than 800 webmasters nominated the finalists and voted for the winners.
Other winners:
*Middle school site: Roberto Clemente Middle School, webmaster Ron Poker, science teacher.
*Elementary school site: Harmony Hills Elementary School, webmaster Rosemary Hess, instructional assistant and paraeducator.
*Office site: Department of Materials Management, webmasters Cecilia Scott, Dawn Geisler, Paul McCabe.
*Special project or initiative site: social studies, webmaster Robert Ferrante, social studies teacher.
Three school staff members and a parent volunteer were recognized for their contributions. One Web Services Team member, Elaine Keagle, was recognized as a ‘‘Web Pioneer” for her technical leadership in developing the site since its inception in 1995.

School board appoints Darnestown principal
Laura S. Colgary, currently principal at Gallup Hill School in Ledyard, Conn., was appointed principal at Darnestown Elementary School by the school board last week.
Gaithersburg High teacher gets Madison fellowship
Joseph N. Sangillo, a teacher at Gaithersburg High School, has received a James Madison Fellowship from the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Washington.
The fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of study toward a master’s degree in a program that must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution, the organization announced.
Sangillo was selected from applicants from across the county. The program requires recipients to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support.
Founded by Congress in 1986, the fellowship foundation is an independent unit under the executive branch of the federal government.
Tryouts for Clarksburg High
Students attending the new Clarksburg High School next year who are interested in being on the cheerleading or pom squads need to try out.
Sessions will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. May 31 and June 1 and 6 to 8 p.m. June 2 at Rocky Hill Middle School, 22401 Brick Haven Way, Clarksburg.
Woodfield’s spring concert and art show
Woodfield Elementary, 24200 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, will hold its spring concert and art show at 7 p.m. May 31.
Arts contest winner from Quince Orchard
Na Ni of Quince Orchard High School, Gaithersburg, took third place in the county and first place in a state Youth Art Contest sponsored by the Federated Woman’s Clubs of Maryland. Students got cash prizes.
