Monique W. Davis was recently named to head the new complex formed by consolidated schools Henry G. Ferguson Elementary and Eugene Burroughs Middle by Prince George's County Schools Superintendent William R. Hite Jr.
"I am very excited," said Davis, of Mitchellville. "I am very humbled to be selected to take on this new endeavor."
Under a plan the Prince George's County school board approved in March, Ferguson will merge with neighboring Eugene Burroughs Middle School beginning this fall with a combined population of 1,100 students. Davis is currently the principal of Ferguson Elementary.
"The biggest challenge will be bridging the gap between elementary and middle school," she said.
Ferguson's and Burroughs's buildings will be consolidated into one complex with kindergarten through eighth grades, with Davis as the principal. The name of the campus has yet to be determined.
"I'm very happy that she's going to continue the successful results of her leadership at the schools," said Denise Foskey, PTA member at Ferguson Elementary. "A great leader determines the quality of education in a school."
Oxon Hill abduction
prompts warning
The Prince George's County Police Department is reminding residents not to leave their children in unattended cars or leave their vehicles while the engine is running after two children were temporarily abducted May 15 in Oxon Hill.
The warning comes after a woman left her engine running with two children in the car while she went into a gas station. The vehicle was stolen with the children inside but was found abandoned soon after with the children unharmed.
Police say leaving children 8 or younger in unattended cars is punishable by up to 30 days in prison and a $500 fine, and leaving a car unattended with the engine running can bring a $70 fine and a point against the violator's driver's license.
