Blake graduate named Philip Merrill Scholar

Karen Shih, a 2005 James Hubert Blake High School graduate, was chosen as the 2008-2009 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar.

Shih will be a senior at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland in College Park.

The program recognizes academic excellence in students and the important role that teachers and university faculty have as mentors. Shih selected James Hubert Blake High School journalism teacher Kevin Keegan as her mentor.

The University of Maryland will offer a $1,000 scholarship in Keegan’s name to an incoming first-year student in the fall of 2009 from Blake or another high school in Montgomery County.

In addition to the scholarship, Keegan will attend a workshop and a celebration luncheon hosted by C.D. Mote, president of the University of Maryland, and the Merrill family on Nov. 14.

Students earnLeadership Awards

Five county students will receive $1,000 Leadership Montgomery Youth Community Leadership Awards.

Five awards are granted annually to Montgomery County high school seniors who have exhibited outstanding leadership in developing and⁄or implementing service-learning activities in their communities.

The cash awards are sponsored by the law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy and Ecker of Rockville.

The students and their parents will attend a dinner and receive the award at Leadership Montgomery’s annual Celebration of Leadership on June 21 at the Montgomery County Conference Center.

The recipients of the awards are Nikki Duong, Sherwood High School; Komal Dilawari, James Hubert Blake High School; Margaret Ellen Johnson, Col. Zadok Magruder High School; Benjamin Moskowitz, Walter Johnson High School; and Benjamin Simon, Montgomery Blair High School.

Alumni basketballtournament at RM

The Richard Montgomery Booster Club will present the 2008 RM Alumni Basketball Games at 6 p.m. Friday.

Former Richard Montgomery High School players from the 1990s and 2000s teams will compete in a three-game tournament in the school’s gym, located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive in Rockville.

The event will feature music, an open-entry shooting contest, raffles, prizes and more. General admission is $5.

Colonelval is comingto Magruder

Col. Zadok Magruder High School will hold Colonelval, its annual end-of-the-year carnival, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The festival will feature food, moonbounces, games and more on the school’s practice field.

The Magruder PTSA will also hold a silent auction during the carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Magruder is located at 5939 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood.

Youth job fair comingto Montgomery College

The Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board’s Youth Council and the Latin American Youth Center will present a youth job fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the gymnasium of Montgomery College’s Rockville campus.

The job fair is aimed at 16- to 21-year-olds and more than 50 employers will be represented. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for interviews and take resumes, Social Security card and pens with blue or black ink.

Admission and parking for the event are free. Montgomery College’s Rockville campus is located at 51 Mannakee St.

Board of Education seeks students for committee

The Montgomery County Board of Education is seeking public high school students to serve on its Family Life and Human Development Advisory Committee.

The committee serves in an advisory capacity to consult with professional educators within the school system in the course of their developing, implementing and evaluating the family life and human development program.

Student appointments are for one year (July through June).

Applications must be received by close of business on June 6 for appointments to be made by the Board of Education on June 23.
