Music Teachers Association honors Bowie studentsThree winners of the Music Teachers Association of Bowie’s awards in April were students from Bowie. Students from Bowie, Laurel and Crofton who studied several forms of music performance competed. In the A-2 division Bowie resident Andrew Spalding, a vocal student of in Sylma Gottlieb’s class, was awarded second place. In the A-1 division pianist Owen Adams, a student of Jeannine Case, took first place and Emily Casey, a vocal student of Gottlieb’s, took second place. Casey also was awarded the $100 Maryland State Music Teachers Association scholarship for performance. Students in the A-1 division had to perform one piece of music from each of the four music periods; baroque, classical, romantic, and 20th century. Students competing in the A-2 division performed two pieces from any of the four periods. Competition chairwoman Wendy Dengler said MTAB has been giving out awards to promising seniors for more than 20 years. ‘‘Several of them are going on to major in music,” Dengler said of the winning students.
