Kayla Moffett, 13, of Beltsville, has been selected to attend the 2009 National Junior Leaders Conference's Discover Medicine and Science program, held June 26 to July 3 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
The six-day conference is for exceptional students interested in medicine. Kayla hopes to one day become a pediatrician, according to her mother, Maureen Moffett.
Kayla, a seventh-grader at Lanham Christian School in Lanham, will learn about disease transmission, patient diagnosis and skeletal anatomy at the conference, which will also include social events and field trips to local attractions.
King Middle School honors Renaissance Roll recipients
Twelve students at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville were named to the school's weekly Renaissance Roll May 1.
The Renaissance Roll programs honors students who exhibit good citizenship and academic achievement. Each nominee is given a "Renaissance Living the Dream" card, which is then placed in a weekly drawing.
The winners from April 27 to May 1 were Morgan Green, Aminata Kamara, Jasleen Martinez, Davoud Tomlinson, Jennifer Bourg, Benedicta Gomes, Daniel Mercado, Yongi Wu, Myleek Chase, Victor Fraser, Yanisha Gregory and Philip Kirk.
They each received a one megabyte flash drive as a prize.
Monthly lunch gathering
in University Park
University Park residents will have a "meet and eat" lunch Sunday at the Three Brothers restaurant in Hyattsville.
Each month, University Park residents share a meal at a different local restaurant in an effort to support local businesses. The group will meet at 1 p.m.
Three Brothers Restaurant is located at 6450 America Blvd. at University Town Center in Hyattsville. Non-University Park residents are also invited to attend.

College Park plans
Memorial Day service
The city of College Park will host a Memorial Day observance Monday at the Veterans Memorial in College Park.
The service will begin at 11 a.m. and last for about one hour. It will include a laying of wreaths, color guard ceremonies, orations and musical selections.

King Middle School student wins regional speech award
Angella Lee, a student at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville, won third place in the Washington, D.C., chapter of Concerned Black Men Inc.'s 27th annual oratory contest.
Concerned Black Men Inc., a volunteer service organization, opens its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Contest to area seventh- through twelfth-graders each year.
This year, student entrants were asked to write a speech about the personal impact of President Obama's election on their lives.
Angella was one of 12 finalists at the contest final on April 8. For placing third, she received a plaque, pendant and certificate. She will also receive $200 in prize money at a May 30 luncheon.

Berwyn neighborhood
hosts pot luck in the park
The Berwyn District Civic Association will have an outdoor pot luck dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 29 at the Berwyn Neighborhood Park in College Park.
Participants are asked to bring a prepared dish and recipe to the park and arrive between 6 and 6:15 p.m. Organizers will provide drinks and eating utensils.

King Middle hosts open house for incoming students, parents
Sixth-graders at Calverton and Vansville Elementary Schools who are planning to attend Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the fall are invited to the school's open house Tuesday afternoon in Beltsville.
The middle school will host incoming students and parents during a tour and information session from 2 to 4 p.m.
