Recreational boaters and swimmers urged to avoid the Potomac RiverHeavy rain contributing to treacherous conditionsThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police have issued an advisory for the upper Potomac River, encouraging recreational boaters, tubers, swimmers and others who use the river to avoid the water until Thursday because of unsafe water conditions. The advisory applies to the section of the river between Cumberland and Little Falls. The heavy rain this spring has contributed to the dangerous conditions, which include high waves and treacherous currents, said Sgt. Ken Turner, a spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources Police. The advisory is the third the Department of Natural Resources Police has issued this spring, based on information from the National Weather Service and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency. ‘‘This is not typical,” Turner said. The heavy precipitation has led to cold water conditions that could lead to hypothermia, Tuner said. ‘‘Summer’s knocking on the door, yet the water’s still very cold,” Tuner said. He also advised caution around creeks and streams, including for those who are fishing. The advisory does not apply to professionally guided river trips or experienced whitewater paddlers. The Department of Natural Resources Police will re-evaluate the advisory Thursday and decide whether to extend the warning.
